Context: Skyroot Aerospace tests the second stage of Vikram-1 space launch vehicle at ISRO’s facility in Sriharikota.

Highlights:

  • Vikram-1, India’s first private-sector-developed launch vehicle, entirely made in India.
  • The second stage, named Kalam-250, is crucial for propelling vehicles from the atmosphere to outer space.
  • Project involves collaboration with ISRO and IN-SPACe, with support from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
  • IN-SPACe stands for the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre. Established in 2020 , it acts as an interface between ISRO and private Sector
Vikram-1 launch vehicle:

ü  Named after Vikram Sarabhai, father of India’s space program.

ü  Built by Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace.

ü  Multi-stage launch vehicle with capacity for around 300 kg payloads in low-earth orbit.

ü  All-carbon-fibre-bodied rocket designed to place multiple satellites into orbit.

ü  Solid-fuelled and uses simpler technologies for minimal infrastructure requirements.
